Poems of the Heart Volume III Read online

Page 3

in days past

  lived beneath the sun

  Seventy, more or less

  infinity, eternity... time

  Smallness pronounced

  beside a universe

  Cold wind blows,

  evaporating memories

  Tasting but a miniscule morsel

  of a promised future mystery

  One place in space...

  limits, dreams unknown

  “Call me soon...

  Don’t hesitate!”

  Walkin’ ‘round in

  a stormy night

  Never saw an inkling

  of hope in Light

  Dripping personality

  spirit pouring forth

Day by day, week by week

  measured out

  Messengers of miracles

  softly calling

  Tightly gagged,

  hid from sight

  Exiled in darkness

  groping for light

  Map in hand

  lost its way

  Greatness

  yet unseen

  Love is beauty

  Love is dark

  Discriminate

  Guard the heart

  Poison, venom,

  in the shadows

  Know not

  when it strikes

  Chasing the shallows,

  lacking depth

  Societies crime

  a wasted mind

  Soldiers mine truth

  People hide their eyes...

  • The best I could ever do is give

  God’s love to you.

  BROKEN

  Burned and never healed

A closed heart they cannot steal

  Without love, without friend

On her own until the end

  Without trust, without pain

  She rides that lonely train

  Dressed so nice, looking fine

Her heart is dark, does not shine

Some bounce back and love again

She’s given up ‘til the end.

  • Some things are better forgotten.

  FILM ROLLS

  The sound muffled

  the picture faded

  the film rolls on...

  Multiple creatures

  some friend, some foe

  Walking, crawling, flying

  Down

  this

  well

  worn road...

  PLAYING WITH FIRE

  Doing our own dance around

  the mud holes of life

  Our media fed minds drenched

  with dangerous images

  portrayed without warning

  Can we play with fire?

  Invisible to the naked eye

  misery can hide...

The grave jeopardy of the beauty

  of love...

  Innocence of dating extinct

Hazard hides in a harmless kiss

  Perils of romance abound

  Striving to believe in innocence

We turn our eye to the tragedy

  of our time...

  poisoned lives gone by...

We grieve the death of old times...

  Innocence

  has

  died...

  • Wouldn’t it be great to have never

  known evil.

  SIX FEET TALL

  Standing six feet tall

  Walking down the hall

  Look into your eyes

  Feel a million “Oh mys!”

  Your beauty and your mind

  look so fine

  Words cannot describe

  these feelings inside

If I could have been birthed

  years later on this earth

  what might have been mine

  tears me up inside

  Your eyes, your smile...

  I’d walk many miles

  to stand by your side

  in another time

  The fury of your fire,

  your passion and desire,

  wild anticipation,

  excitement, imagination

  Few who lived would know

  what we would behold,

  love drenched, life wrenched...

‘til it can give no more...

  • I should have stayed young

  and waited for you.

  TO REALLY LIVE

  To live!

  To really live!

To experience life as brand new

  day-in and day-out

  Life to the full

the blood of the Eternal Creator

  flowing through your veins

  A pure power, peaceful, unending

  confident, real

  A cleansing energy, calmingly strong

Not a wishful existence but a hope

  that is sure

Forever in the shadow of His wings,

  more mighty than anything

  Living water freely flows,

  life like you’ve never known!

  • To get more out of life than life wants to give.

  • Love life, love God, love friends

  Love until the end.

  LISTEN

As you sit in your kitchen

  and you stop to listen

can you hear the time go by?

  Time we cannot borrow

  here today

  gone tomorrow...

  ANOTHER PLAN

  When God created heaven

  when He formed the earth

  when He fashioned man

  from a pile of dirt

  He could see our future

  He could see us fall

  He could see us listening

  to the Tempter’s call

It must have broke His heart

It must have made Him cry

when he saw us trade His love

  for the Devil’s lie

  At that very instant

  man and woman died...

  gave away eternal life

  sold it for a lie...

  The Devil, he was laughing

  how he tricked the man

  Little did he know

  God had another plan...

  ON THAT DAY!

Did you hear the Devil shriek

did you hear him stomp his feet

when the stone was rolled away

  on that Resurrection Day?!!

  DEEP DESIRE

  Darkness chases light away

  weaving through the trees

  across the flowing field

  Splashing fire, deep desire

  spills into the night

  Romance blossoms

  hid from sight

  Two hearts

  hold each other tight...

  TO HOLD YOU

Let me hold you in my arms

  Let me taste your lips

Let me love you for a while

  ‘Til moon

  falls from

  the sky...

  HOW MUCH

How many miles in a lifetime

How many singers, how many songs

How many moments can be treasured

How many loved ones can we know

How much beauty can be seen

How much love can be shown?

  • Seventy is so young to be old...

Can we live another life or so...

  PARALLEL DIMENSION

Peering through the vastness of time

  stretching the human mind

Whether I wake or sleep through night

  something simply doesn’t seem right

  Inside my soul I listen

  to a parallel dimension

  Bold imagination

  longing for re-creation

  Climbing... reaching... then I pause...

  quietness a picture draws
/>
Masses clamor for moments of rapture

mere mortals have longed to capture!

  COLORS

  The colors of the sun

  burst across the morning scene

  painted on a canvas sky...

  Tears of rain fall down

  on me...

  • New thoughts like highways

  connect the cities and towns

  of the mind.

  • They say tomorrow never comes

but I think it came and went...

  NATURE STRAINS

Like plucking a gold leaf from a

scraggly tree on a dusty deserted road

in the middle of a long hot summer...

Such a rare find... she shines

from head to toe, excitement untold,

  a beautiful diamond glistening

in the midst of utter ruin...

A bright, gleaming star set against

the backdrop of a cold, dark world

  once bright with light

  long since gone mad...

  The contrast inquisitive...

From where was the beauty drawn

  and why was it placed

in such an ugly time and space?

Made so well... then set inside

  a destructive hell...?

  The beauty in the beast?

  The art a question mark

  of paths chosen by all

for the good, the bad and the ugly...

Nature strains amidst a pouring rain...

  THINKIN’ ‘BOUT YOU

  Sittin’ here rockin’ this chair

thinkin’ ‘bout you, you thinkin’ ‘bout me

Dancin’ in the kitchen Sunday morning alone

thinkin’ ‘bout Paris and I’m thinkin’ ‘bout Rome

Rockin’ down the road in a pickup truck

thinkin’ ‘bout fate and I’m thinkin’ ‘bout luck

Walkin’ down the street in the summer heat

walkin’ to the music not skippin’ a beat

Layin in the grass lookin’ at the big sky

moon and stars up there so high

Walkin’ down the road singin’ a song

lookin’ for love, hope it won’t be long

Come on down, come on down

Come on down, bring your love to me

  GRANDDAD (2)

How many animals did Granddad feed,

How many gardens did he hoe,

How many miles did he walk,

How many horses has he rode?

  • Uncle Jim said, “It’s too wet to plow.”

  • Billy Joe said, “The show must go on!”

  ‘OLE KENTUCKY

Carry me back to ‘ole Kentucky

Carry me back where I was born

Carry me back to ‘ole Kentucky

Lately my heart’s been so forlorn

Draw me a drink of Kentucky water

Drop the pail down in the well

Draw me a drink of Kentucky water

I’ve got a thrist I need to quell

  When I think about Kentucky

and the times we had of old

  It’s a very precious moment

Tears well up inside my soul

Won’t you tell my dear Grandmother

I’ll be there to see her soon

Before the bluegrass starts to green

and the redbuds start to bloom

She cooked beans, and she cooked some greens

She made a pone of cornbread too

She poured a tall glass of sweet milk

She said a prayer for me and you

I wanna go to the head of the holler

Won’t you take me there right now

I wanna see my friends and family

  Living there in ‘ole McDowell

Where the creek runs right through town

And the gardens grow so well

Where the trees grow as thick as weeds

And old timers weave tall tales

Carry me back to ‘ole Kentucky

Carry me back where I was born

Carry me back to ‘ole Kentucky

Lately my heart’s been so forlorn.

  MEMORIES

  Outhouses, swinging bridges

  coal miners eyes

  Houses hang from hillsides

  that reach into the sky...

  RATTLE TATTLE AT MY DOOR

A rap tap tappin’, a knock knock

  knockin, a rattle tattle tattle

  at my door

It’s just the wind I said with

a grin but then I heard

  the sound again

Maybe a ghost, or a friend who

  passed, It’ll go away soon

  It surely won’t last

A rap tap tappin’, a knock knock

  knockin’, a rattle tattle tattle

  at my door

The front door I faced, I

perked up my ears, my heart

beat raced... as I strained to hear

Not making a move, I sat with

a smile, the room grew cold

  my thoughts went wild

  An apparition long lost, A

  wandering ghost... from way back

  when... my door to host

A rap tap tappin’, a knock knock

  knockin’, a rattle tattle tattle

  at my door

Who’s there at my door? Speak up

right now! I’m a mean old man!

  I’ll get you somehow!!

Not a sound did I hear, Not

even a peep, Not the slightest

whisper from the door did seep

Get away this instant! Get away

from my door! You’re making me angry!

  I’ll have it no more!

A rap tap tappin’, a knock knock

  knockin’, a rattle tattle tattle

  at my door

I stood up slowly... walked across

the floor... I heard a creaking

  as I neared the door

  I opened it up!

  And there they were!

  Black as night

  with

  long dark

  fur...

  LITTLE EYES SO BIG

  Move the trees

  Move the trees

  I wanna see

  I wanna see

  I can do it!

  I can do it!

  Let me do it!

  I WANT YOU

If you go on before I do

  when I get to heaven

  I want to see you

If I go on before you do

  I want you

  to come there too

  We’ll walk on down

  the streets of gold

  We’ll praise the Lord

  and never grow old!

  A PIECE OF TRUTH FORGOTTEN

  About a King who traveled

  through space and time

  Arriving on the scene

  as a little bitty child

  His life He gave

  for you and me

  That eyes so blind

  yet may believe...

  TRUTH NEVER LIES

  Call me in the morning

  Look into my eyes

  Pleasure or danger

  The truth never lies

  Call it on the carpet

  Blow it in the wind

  Truth will never lie

  Even in the end

  Truth never tires

  Never grows ill

It takes you through the valley

  And up the highest hill

  Dance by the starlight

  in the morning dew

Call me when you see the way

  Let me know it’s true

  BACK AGAIN

  Here we are

  back again

/>   where we once

  were before

  Much time passed

  since we last

  walked through

  this open door...

  APPEARANCE

  A fresh coat of paint,

  a bright, shining light

  appearing as good

  yet dark as night

  Lies are abundant

  deception flows free

  many fall daily

  into this stream

  The battle is raging

  each minute, each hour

  good versus evil

  the clashing of power!

  A LONG WAYS

  I study moon and stars,

  read the map every day

I’m a long ways from anywhere,

I need a place to lay

  When the road grows long

  and light escapes the day

  I’ll slow this spaceship down

and find a place to stay

  There’s a home I’m looking for

It must be on the way

I’ll ride until I find it

  Then I’ll stop and play...

  SOME LIKE

Some like to flirt, some don’t

Some like to talk, some won’t

Some like to joke and laugh

  Some take another path

Some like to look their best

Some have simply lost their zest...

  TOMORROW

  Can we see tomorrow

  Can we see another day

Can we see what we will do

The path that we will take?

  Will it bring us happiness

  Will it bring us peace

  Will it bring us everything

  that we will ever need?

  Will we walk together

  Will we laugh out loud

  in sunshine there forever

  without a single cloud?

  NO FROST

The autumn sun is shining low

  North wind soon will blow

I must be on the road

  before the nights grow cold

Before the last bright light is shone

I’ll be looking for a home

  Where the wind is soft

  the winter brings no frost

  and the sun shines oft...

  WANTING MORE

  The cool wind blows

across the desert of my soul

  such a relaxing flow

A sweet lady reclines close by

  pondering exposure

  yet choosing to hide

  As we sat together

  in the midnight hour

  she touched my arm

  I felt her power

I’ve been by her side before

She always keeps me wanting more

I sigh... as I dream of a time

I may warm by her fire,

feel the depths of her desire

  while the cool wind blows

across the desert of my soul...

  • Love is a diamond... hiding

in the shadows of the night

Love’s richness bears gifts of delight.

  • Do we use time? Or does

  time use us?

  HOME

There’s an old box frame shack

That’s where I want to go back

My friend can you take me there now

Where my Dad and my Grandpa once plowed

In the hills they took their stand

Grandpa Grover hoed and sowed the land

He was Mommy Minnie’s only man

Together they raised the Stumbo clan

Where a simpler way of life once was led

Twelve children everyday once was fed

Where sparrows and robins they chirp and sing

By rocks and streams and hills and dreams

Heart, mind and soul their sound surrounds

  Good memories linger all around

  GRANDMA

I can hear my homeplace calling

  in the deepest, darkest night

I can see my Grandma standing

  warming by the firelight

I can hear her sweet, soft voice

saying, “Son, you need to know...

There’ll be good and there’ll be bad

  where’er you ever go.

  Don’t treat anyone unkindly,

  but be careful choosing friends

for if you fall into bad comp’ny

it can lead unto your end.”

Her words ring true, it does not matter

where I go or where I’ve been

  Don’t treat anyone unkindly

  but be careful choosing friends.

  GRANDDAD

Granddad ate mutton, and bacon and ham

He came from the hills where they live off the land

Look out in the garden, what do you see

Turnip greens, white half runner beans

Look out in the chicken pen

White leghorn fryers and red dommer hens

For some it is, for some it has been

I’ll try to record it right here with my pen

Granddad went out to get something to eat

Out in the smokehouse hung the cured meat

He took a piece of cornbread, an onion and a knife

Back in the country this was the life

They raised a garden and killed wild game

They knew how to hoe and they knew how to aim

One lady once said she wouldn’t try at all

to raise up a family without a fat hog

Granddad ate mutton and bacon and ham

He came from the hills where they live off the land.
